An old Viking shoes up out of the blue challenging a younger- rumored to be invincible- warrior to mortal combat for no apparent reason other than “because I heard you’re tough”. I don’t think this has anything to do with arrogance. I think the old guy wants a worthy opponent to send him to Valhalla.
New Years Resolutions:
On Yule Eve, the best boar in the herd , or a wild boar from the forest was brought into the hall where the assembled company laid their hands upon the animals head and made their unbreakable oaths. Heard by the boar, these oaths were thought to go straight to the ears of Freyr himself.
“I don’t think a scrawny little boy like you deserves a knife like this” later followed by “I thought you were a real man.” It’s like he’s not even trying to be consistent.
Agnar is obviously just saying inflammatory things to goad Coal into taking the first swing, a classic strategy used by bullies everywhere. If he’s very lucky, his efforts will fail.
The “scrawny boy” sentence is Coal remembering what he said to Ibrahim when they met long ago. It’s a nasty surprise for Coal to hear something similar from someone he dislikes so much.
Oh. Whoops. I admit, I was kind of wondering why those words were not in normal speech bubbles. Everything makes sense now.
Agnar is still being wildly inconsistent in his goading, though. He called Coal a little boy and questioned whether Coal knew how to use a sword, and then he turned around and said “I thought you were a real man.” Highly illogical.
“First explain how you thought a scrawny little boy like me, who doesn’t deserve a knife like this and probably doesn’t even know how to use it, how you thought I was a REAL man. How did you come to think that, me being so weak and all? You must be *really smart,* tell me how you figured it out.”
Agnar never said Coal was scrawny (though he did call him a “little boy” lol), that was Coal remembering what he said to Ibrahim a while ago. Agnar is definitely trying to goad Coal however he can, though.
Those eyes in panel 1! Particularly Loki’s eyes! XD
At least he kept his glamour up.
I love this, you have really pushed the longship out on the character development in this chapter.
Why in deed.

Old guy has some issues.
New years resolution, be more like Coal. Don’t start fights if there are other options.
Or at least try, lol.
thank you for this wonderful story and art!

Aw thanks! This chapter is Very Important for Coal.
Well, you have it your best shot, Coal.
He can but try.
