Not a monster, but eerie echoes of the Witchworld books by Andre Norton witht eh tents pitched behind the protection of walls (I’ve tried it, it totally helps), as she was the only mother among the fathers of golden age science fiction, feminists critics shunned her even more than they did Agatha Christie and CJ Cherryh in their days … well, Cherryh has lived long enough for a lot of that to fall by the wayside.
