I’m sure those birds don’t mean anything.
A gigantic shoutout to Ronkwahrhakónha Dube of Salt and Sage Books. They were my sensitivity reader for this particular chapter to make sure Arne’s feelings were as authentic as I could write them.
As is customary (sort of), there’ll be a mini-break as I get Chapter 20 ready. The updates will resume on March 31st! If you want to see the pages as soon as they’re finished, you can join my Patreon.
I Thought I had a Memory of those birds
They’re still hanging around.
I see what you did there…
Looks like Odin is watching them.
He’s gotta be up on all the gossip.
I have to comment on panel #2. It’s subtle, but you achieve a really good representation of an Icelandic coast – the dark beach, the rolling hills, the utter lack of trees, the mist. Iceland is not Norway. Deep-V fjords are rare in Iceland, and not where people settled. But I’m a bit biased – I lived on a flat peninsula surrounded by the ocean. Garður to be more precise.
Oh, thank you! I certainly enjoyed looking at reference for Iceland, it’s a beautiful place. I knew I wanted to include black-sand beaches because they’re cool, and it was interesting how green Iceland actually was. I’m glad it looks like what it should look like, lol.
I really love the way you did the colors on this page. Somehow, I got the perfect sense of time and place from them–it’s cold, but bright, like 10AM on an overcast day, where you can feel the sun beating against the clouds just out of view.
Also Arne’s hat makes him look like Link
Thank you! And he does look like Link! That was unintentional, but Arne is definitely going on a journey, so it still works.
Your art is so wonderful Sarah. Like Matthew I admire your evocation of the Icelandic landscape in panel 2. And the abstract but very real waves in panel 4. You’ll be missed but enjoy your mini-break!
Thank you! It’s always fun to play around with how to show the water and waves like that.
A satisfying end to the chapter. Lovely art as usual. But where to now? Following Hedda’s path first or to Arnies homeland and that creature in chains.
Time and Sarah will tell…..
I’m sure everything will go smoothly regardless.
Uh-huh. Totally.
Excellent Details! (As previously mentioned by others!)
And I admire Arnie’s Cloak Pin – nicely done!
I always love your environmental shots. That last panel is beautiful – I can almost feel the wind and the spray and the roll of the waves.
